This is a 16 size, 23 jewel Waltham Model #1899. "Riverside Maximus" -- one of the nicest watches that Waltham ever made. It is stem wind and pendant set, is adjusted to temperature and five positions. Because it is pendant set instead of lever set, it wouldn't have been approved for use on all railroads at the time it was made, but in every other respect it meets or exceeds every requirement for a "railroad grade" watch and it was actually approved for use on a number of railroads. And the damaskeening on the movement is as fine as any I have seen! The watch is housed in a nicely engraved gold-filled case. The serial number is 11076791, which dates it to about 1902.
